Seusstastic Ideas!

Seusstastic Ideas!

Dr. Seuss' Day is usually celebrated in the primary grades, but I refuse to give it up
just because I teach big kids :)
So I alter my activities to meet my students needs.

Plus... who doesn't love Dr. Seuss?!?!?

I made 2 NEW Foldables earlier this week and today I'm sharing the template with you as my FREEBIE for the upcoming Dr Seuss celebration next week. I decided to share it today so you have time time ver the weekend to prepare and get ready for Dr. Seuss Day!!!!

The first one is a story summarizer and can be used with ANY Dr. Seuss book!!!
Younger kids can illustrate the answers and older kids can write them in.

The second foldable is the same only it reviews figurative language and can be used with
any of Dr. Seuss' books as well as they are filled with figurative language.

These Seuss Foldables were made with Laura Candler's template and adapted for my students.
Visit the Corkboard Connection Blog for the original post.

Finally!!!!! some activities you can use with older kids to celebrate Dr. Seuss!

To download the template for these foldable FREE click here

The template includes a hat hand drawn by my student and is perfect for this foldable.

Check out this great adaptation of them by a fellow blogger who uses my template with her kids!

Another fun activity I plan on doing with my kids that day is based on
 a Kagan's Cooperative Groups structures.

The strategy is called Inside - Outside Circle.

You divide the class divided into two groups. One group stands in an inner circle facing out and the other group stand in an outer circle facing the inner circle. In concentric circles, students rotate to face new partners and then answer or discuss the question posed by the teacher.
You can play music in the background as the kids rotate in their circle.
When you stop the music the person each student faces is their question partner.
You ask a question out loud about any of the literary elements {i.e. what is the author's purpose}
and each pair has to answer the question to one another and discuss it for 1 min.
Then you can either play the music again so they find new partner or just ask one of the circles to take 5 steps to the right or left and  meet their new partner.
This activity is  a perfect opportunity to engage students in reviewing the benchmarks in a fun active way that gives the kids movement & social opportunities.

Here are some questions you can ask.

You can alter the questions to your grade level and you can use benchmark stem questions from your curriculum and state test.

You can use that activity with any of the Dr. Seuss books you plan on reading.
I'll be using it with the same one I plan on reading for the Foldable activity.

My book of choice is

If you haven't read this book to your students yet - it's a MUST!!!!!!

It's all about standardized testing and really empowers teachers & students!

Don't Miss Out!

  6. This looks like a great activity for my third graders. How did you get the alternating red and white flaps on top? Did you cut and glue each one separately?

  8. Lynn & Mrs. Harris, all I did was print the same hat template on red & off white construction papers. Then I cut them off alternating colors and glued them to the white copy :)

You can now grab a FREE copy of the template :)
